John Smallwood Bursary Application Form
Named after a renowned teacher and course developer at Virtual High School, the John Smallwood Bursary is awarded to a deserving Canadian student based on financial need.
Eligibility Criteria and Bursary Details
- Students must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or currently living in Canada.
- Students must demonstrate financial need.
- The bursary covers the full cost of tuition for one standard VHS course (up to $589 CAD); however, the bursary can only be applied to future courses, not courses in which students are currently enrolled.
- The John Smallwood Bursary will be granted six times per year (February, April, June, August, October, and December).
- One recipient will be chosen for each submission period.
- This bursary is non-transferable, and successful applicants must utilize the bursary within 90 days of the date of issuance.
- Successful applicants may only receive the bursary once per calendar year but are welcome to reapply the following year.
Application Process
Applications are due on or before the 15th of the month in which the bursary will be granted. Once the recipient has been selected, all applicants will be contacted on or before the 25th of the month in which the bursary will be granted.
After submitting your completed application form, you will be prompted to upload your supporting documentation. Please be sure to include the following:
- Most recent Notice of Assessment
- High school transcript*

- If your transcript is not in English or French, please submit a copy of both the original transcript and a translated copy completed by a certified translator.
- If you do not have a transcript (i.e., homeschooled students), please send a current report of your academic progress.
