Getting from Here to There: Grade 9 Learning Strategies

October 11, 2023

A woman standing in front of a bookshelf with the words identify learning styles, set goals, and develop skills.

Thus far in your experiences as a student, you’ve had great success! You’re ready for another phase in your educational journey, and as you continue to grow in your understanding, the concepts and ideas you encounter will become more interesting and, yes, more complex. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the work will be more difficult, but there will likely be more of it. To prepare you for what comes next, we present to you our NEW Grade 9 Learning Strategies (GLS1O) course, designed to help students manage their learning as they advance in high school and beyond!

The early lessons in the course deal with the topic of intelligence and the fact that each person can have a different type of intelligence. That is, all of us are good at different things, and we have unique styles of learning. That’s a good thing since the more diverse our abilities, the more opportunities there are for everyone to learn and develop new skills. Not only will you identify your unique learning styles, but you will also see how setting goals can help you determine your way forward. You’ll discover different techniques on how to manage stress and improve your skills in mind mapping, note-taking, and test preparation. You will learn how to manage your time so that you can effectively meet deadlines and hone your presentation skills in multimedia as you may be asked to create videos in your coursework. Lessons on refining your reading and writing skills will further prepare you for your studies in English and other subject areas.

As you move through the course, you’ll also explore how we interact with others in the creation of group projects, how we can easily resolve conflicts with other people, and how we can become our own best advocates in various situations. The final lessons in the course have you look to the future to investigate such topics as finding your own unique pathway though secondary school, thinking about employment, and investigating community resources (a topic often overlooked and underestimated by students). The course ends with a look at personal finance management to help students like you make plans to enter the workplace or attend college or university after high school graduation. This practical course enables you to prepare for what comes next in the classroom and in your everyday life as you focus on the present and plan for the future.
