Bursaries

Our mission as a school is to empower students, and a key part of this mission is ensuring that our courses are accessible to Canadian and international students from a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. Virtual High School is proud to grant bursaries to eligible students who demonstrate a need for financial aid with their educational goals.

Named after a renowned teacher and course developer at Virtual High School, the John Smallwood Bursary is awarded to a deserving Canadian student based on financial need.

Eligibility
  • Students must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or currently living in Canada.
  • Students must demonstrate financial need.
AmountThe bursary covers the full tuition cost for one standard VHS course (up to $589 CAD).
Frequency
  • One bursary will be granted six times per year (February, April, June, August, October, and December).
  • One recipient will be chosen for each submission period.
How to ApplyComplete the application form and submit all required documents.
Application DeadlineApplications are due on or before the 15th of the month in which the bursary will be granted.
Recipient AnnouncementOnce the recipient has been selected, all applicants will be contacted on or before the 25th of the month in which the bursary will be granted.

The International Student Bursary was designed to help students outside of Canada overcome financial barriers in order to succeed academically at Virtual High School.

Eligibility
  • Students must not be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or currently living in Canada.
  • Students must demonstrate financial need.
AmountThe bursary covers the full tuition cost for one standard VHS course, including applicable international student fees (up to $814 CAD).
Frequency
  • One bursary will be granted six times per year (January, March, May, July, September, and November).
  • One recipient will be chosen for each submission period.
How to ApplyComplete the application form and submit all required documents.
Application DeadlineApplications are due on or before the 15th of the month in which the bursary will be granted.
Recipient AnnouncementOnce the recipient has been selected, all applicants will be contacted on or before the 25th of the month in which the bursary will be granted.

Scholarships

To recognize the outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements of our students, Virtual High School offers a selection of merit-based scholarships.

In recognition of a beloved former VHS staff member and incredible artist, the Julie O’Rourke Memorial Scholarship was created to offset expenses for students pursuing post-secondary studies in fine arts or design programs.

Eligibility
  • Students must provide proof that they have been accepted, or conditionally accepted, to a program in fine arts or design at the post-secondary level.
  • This scholarship is restricted to current VHS students or those who have successfully completed a VHS course within the past 3 years.
  • A portfolio of artwork in any medium must be provided as part of the application process.
Amount$1,000 CAD
FrequencyOne recipient will be chosen each year.

Application DeadlineAugust 1
Recipient AnnouncementOnce the recipient has been selected, all applicants will be contacted on or before August 31.

Awarded in honour of one of Virtual High School’s most tenacious and dedicated teachers, the goal of the Sommerville Scholarship is to support students pursuing post-secondary studies in history, geography, economics, or politics programs.

Eligibility
  • Students must provide proof that they have been accepted, or conditionally accepted, to a program in history, geography, economics, or politics at the post-secondary level.
  • Applicants must have successfully completed at least one course from the VHS Canadian and World Studies Department within the current scholarship year.
Amount$1,000 CAD
FrequencyOne recipient will be chosen each year.

Application DeadlineJune 30
Recipient AnnouncementOnce the recipient has been selected, all applicants will be contacted on or before July 31.
